The Last Pearl(1/2)
the Last pearl, 1854
we are a rich, happy hoe, where the aster, the servants, the friends of the faily are full of joy and felicity.
For on this day a son and heir has been born, and other and child are dog well.
the p the bed-chaber had been partly shaded, and the dows were vered with heavy curtas of so stly silken aterial.
the carpet was thid soft, like a c of oss.
Everythg io sber, everythg had a charg look of repose; and so the nurse had disvered, for she slept; and well she ight sleep, while everythg arouold of happess and blessg.
the guardian angel of the hoe leaned agast the head of the bed; while over the child read, as it were, a of shg stars, and each star earl of happess.
All the good stars of life had brought their gifts to the newly born; here sparkled health, wealth, fortune, and love; short, there seed to be everythg for whi uld wish oh.
“Everythg has beeowed here,” said the guardian angel.
“No, not everythg,” said a voiear hi — the voice of the good angel of the child; “one fairy has not yet brought her gift, but she will, even if years should epse, she will brg her gift; it is the st pearl that is wantg.”
“wantg!” cried the guardian angel; “nothg t be wantg here; and if it is such, let fetch it; let seek the powerful fairy; let go to her.”
“She will e, she will e so day unsought!”
“her pearl t not be issg; it t be there, that the , when worn, ay be plete. where is she to be found? where does she dwell?” said the guardian angel.
“tell , and I will procure the pearl.”
“will you do that?” replied the good angel of the child.
“then I will lead you to her directly, wherever she ay be. She has no abidg pce; she rules the pace of the eperor, sotis she ehe peasant’s huble t; she passes no ohout leavg a trace of her presence. She brgs her gift with her, whether it is a world or a bauble. to this child she t e. You thk that to wait for this ti would be long and eless. well, the go for this pearl — the only one g aidst all this wealth.”
then hand--hand they floated away to the spot where the fairy was now lgerg.
It was a rge hoe with dark dows ay roos, which a peculiar stillness reigned.
A whole row of dows stood open, so that the rude d uld e its pleasure, and the long white curtas waved to and fro the current of air.
Ire of one of the roos stood an open ff, which y the body of a woan, still the bloo of youth and very beautiful.
